McGuinty’s office broke law by deleting gas plant e-mails: Commissioner

TORONTO — Opposition MPPs claimed a gas plant coverup after revelations that senior Ontario Liberal political staff broke the law when they deleted e-mails that could have shed light on why the government cancelled two gas plants at a cost to taxpayers of $585 million.

Information and Privacy Commissioner Dr. Ann Cavoukian found that e-mails sent and received by former chiefs of staff to the minister of energy and former premier Dalton McGuinty were deliberately deleted, although she said she could not state “with certainty” that the record destruction was done to avoid transparency.
