Alberta putting reams of raw data online for researchers, entrepreneurs

EDMONTON – The Alberta government is making reams of raw data available online on everything from groundwater activity to birth statistics.

Service Alberta Minister Manmeet Bhullar says the goal of what’s being called the open data portal is to share information that can be used to support innovative ideas and projects.

He says none of the data is subject to legal restrictions and is designed to be searched through and sorted quickly.

There are currently 280 data sets on the portal.

More sets will be added once they are cleared of any personal or proprietary information.

The portal was constructed by provincial government staff using open source software.
